Jye Linnane made an emotional comeback – and produced a stunning debut – in the One New Zealand Warriors’ comprehensive 46-4 round 11 New South Wales Cup win over Melbourne at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.
The 20-year-old’s 2024 and 2025 seasons had been ruined by two ACL knee injuries, the second of them sidelining him since January last year.
Highly regarded as a running half, he was signed from the Newcastle Knights in April last year, arriving at the club early to complete his rehab from his second surgery.
Ultimately Linnane had to wait until 11 rounds into the season to make his first appearance for his new club in what was also his NSW Cup debut.
He took no time at all to demonstrate why the Warriors were keen on signing him.
Moved out of the halves, he was used in the centres teamed up on the left edge with Luke Hanson, Kayliss Fatialofa and Daeon Amituanai – and he had a ball.

His first touch gave a hint of what was to come and just four minutes in there were scenes of utter elation as he backed up Jett Cleary for the Warriors’ first try (one Cleary might have scored himself).
The left-side attack was the defining feature of the game with Hanson, Fatialofa, Linnane and Amituanai repeatedly cutting through the Storm’s right side with precision, producing a handful of tries and demonstrating the depth of this emerging Warriors squad.
Linnane's two-try, one-assist return in a 50-minute shift after such a long lay-off was a statement. Naturally a standoff, his ability to perform in an unfamiliar position at centre while producing that output suggests his best football remains well ahead of him.
Cleary was outstanding from start to finish. Seven conversions from eight attempts, a try assist and constant control of field position marked a masterclass from the young halfback.
After Linnane’s first try, the Warriors' left-side attack became virtually unstoppable. Hanson and Cleary repeatedly found Fatialofa and Amituanai in space, with Fatialofa scoring his team's second before right Harry Tauafiafi crossed for a third. Three tries and three conversions inside 30 minutes put the Warriors ahead 18-0.
The scoring continued relentlessly before halftime. Linnane claiming his second try off another incisive left-side movement, with Cleary converting to send the Warriors to the break at 24-0.
The second half brought more of the same. Cleary delivered a perfectly weighted grubber kick for Amituanai early in the piece before Amituanai scored again with further tries to Eddie Ieremia-Toeava and Marata Niukore extended the lead to 46-0. Each Warriors try was a product of patient build-up play, with the halves pairing consistently finding space on the edges.
With the win the Warriors have moved within two points of the top five ahead of another away trip when they face the Dragons at Jubilee Stadium next Saturday.
