Auckland colours inspire Heritage jersey

Auckland’s traditional colours are the inspiration behind the Vodafone Warriors’ Heritage jersey unveiled today for the 2019 NRL season.

The Auckland Rugby League, the club’s original owner, paved the way for the Auckland Warriors’ introduction into the Australian competition in 1995.

Since then Auckland’s blue and white colours and distinctive chevron have featured in a number of the club’s heritage jersey designs.

Among them was a replica of the 1977 kit worn by the Vodafone Warriors in 2007 when they celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Auckland team’s grand slam of victories over touring international teams Australia, Great Britain and France.

For the Vodafone Warriors’ 25th season in 2019, the club and Canterbury of New Zealand have looked back more than 60 years to produce a strip showcasing the blue and white hoops sported by the champion 1956 Auckland team. Auckland held the Northern Union Cup  and won the inter-district competition beating Otago, Canterbury and West Coast. The team included Keith Bell, Brian Campbell, Bevin Hough, Alan Riechelmann and George Turner, all Kiwis during their careers.

A special feature of the 2019 Heritage jersey is the listing of the names, club numbers and junior clubs for each of the 24 players who appeared in the Auckland Warriors’ debut campaign in the Winfield Cup in 1995.
