The Vodafone Warriors are delighted that corporate sales manager Gordon Gibbons has been honoured with a distinguished service award but the New Zealand Rugby League for his service and commitment to the game.

“When Sir Peter Leitch came into the office to tell me the news I was blown away, very humbled actually,” said Gibbons.

Like many of associated with the game, he started out as a junior player and was quick to point out why he does what he does.

“I’ve been involved with the game since I was five years old and I’ve stayed involved because I love the game,” he said.

Gibbons went on to play premier grade football for the Manukau Magpies for five years where he also coached and managed numerous junior teams.

His first involvement with the Vodafone Warriors was as a local contact for the Brisbane Broncos during their first visit in 1995 before a 12-year stint as Kiwis team manager from 1994 to 2004. He was then brought out of 'retirement' to be part of the Kiwis’ historic Rugby League World Cup campaign in 2008.

“I’m very blessed that I get the opportunity to not only follow my passion as a hobby but also as a career.”

Most recently he spent eight years at Auckland Rugby League as manager of football operations and sponsorship before joining the Vodafone Warriors in his current role in 2014.

As long-serving MC for the club ‘Gordy’ can be found hosting corporate members in the Gold Lounge at every home game, providing supporters with some of the best corporate hospitality in the country.

“I’ve met so many wonderful people over the years, right from my days at Manukau, when I was on the board under the supervision of Neil Smithson. Then my time in the Kiwis learning from people like Sel Shanks and Ray Haffenden and, of course, my mentor Sir Peter Leitch, who has always given me the feedback that I need, ” said Gibbons.

Vodafone Warriors staff and players would like to congratulate him on receiving this prestigious award.
