Mogg signed as assistant coach

Former Queensland State of Origin representative Adam Mogg has joined the Vodafone Warriors’ coaching staff for the rest of the 2014 NRL season.

The 36-year-old Mogg fills the assistant coach’s vacancy created by Andrew McFadden’s elevation to acting head coach last month.

His arrival brings the Vodafone Warriors’ frontline NRL coaching team back to its previous complement of three including incumbent assistant coach Ricky Henry.

After a playing career with Parramatta and Canberra in the NRL and Les Catalans Dragons in the English Super League, Mogg has been involved in coaching roles with the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles and the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup competition; he has also had a part-time involvement with the Vodafone Warriors this season.

“Adam and I have links stretching back to our time at Canberra and also when we were both with Les Catalans (when McFadden was assistant coach there),” said McFadden.

“While he was at the Dragons, (head coach) Mick Potter and I also used Adam in a coaching role.

“Until now he has been helping us behind the scenes in the video analysis area. This is a great opportunity for him to further his coaching career.”

The signing ironically comes in a week when the Vodafone Warriors prepare to face Mogg’s – and McFadden’s – old club Canberra at Eden Park on Saturday (5.00pm kick-off).

After beginning his NRL career with Parramatta in 2002, Mogg played 96 times for the Raiders across five seasons – 2003-2006 and 2010 – while McFadden had 76 games for the club from 1997-2001.

“I have aspirations as a coach and I’m really excited about having this chance to work with Cappy (McFadden) at the Vodafone Warriors,” said Mogg.

“I’ve always had a lot of respect for the Warriors from my playing days. They were always tough opponents when I came up against them.

“There’s so much talent at this club and the performances lately, especially against the Storm, have shown what the side is capable of.”

Besides his NRL and Super League achievements, Mogg has a chapter in Origin folklore after his two-game Queensland career in 2006.

New South Wales had won the previous three series and was up 1-0 heading into game two in Brisbane. Called in as a replacement for the injured Greg Inglis, Mogg, a specialist centre, scored two tries on the wing in a 30-6 victory and then snared another in the series-clinching 16-14 win in Melbourne (the first of Queensland’s record eight consecutive Origin triumphs).

In another career highlight in his first season with Les Catalans in 2007, Mogg partnered Vodafone Warriors legend – and now NYC coach – Stacey Jones in the halves in their Challenge Cup final appearance against St Helens at Wembley.
