Rugby league people and the wider community have raised more than $80,000 so far to support former Warriors cult hero Jason Death in his fight to recover from a fall which left him with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.
While the 54-year-old has now been moved out of intensive care into a ward, he faces more operations in his long road to recovery.
A Go Fund Me page set up to support the family has so far topped $82,000 with rugby league legends Andrew Johns and Steve Roach plus Sir Peter Leitch among those making donations.
Father of four Death is brother-in-law of former Warriors teammate Ivan Cleary and uncle to Nathan and Jett Cleary (his wife Yvette's sister is Cleary’s wife Rebecca).
Nicknamed the Doctor and Doctor Death after joining the Warriors, the loose forward-hooker made 55 appearances as Warrior #59 from 1999-2001 and was named the club’s player of the year in his first season.
Popular with teammates and supporters alike, he had a section named after him – Death Row – at Ericsson Stadium where a group of his most ardent fans were kitted out in Grim Reaper costumes.
Death went on to play a total of 201 NRL games for Canberra, North Queensland, the Warriors and South Sydney.
He works in the fitness industry as managing director and founder of the Concept 42 gym.
