Hooker Braelan Marsh will become the third son of a former Warrior to make his New South Wales Cup debut when the One New Zealand Warriors face the Western Suburbs Magpies in Friday night’s fourth round encounter at Go Media Stadium (5.15pm kick-off).
The 19-year-old’s father PJ Marsh (Warrior #96) had a huge impact in his time with the club despite making just 35 appearances in his two seasons in Auckland in 2002 and 20023 (including the Warriors’ first grand final).
Marsh junior has been turning plenty of heads as well with his performances for the Warriors’ table-topping Jersey Flegg Cup (under-21) side.
Like their NRL counterparts, the Warriors have been outstanding in the first three rounds of the competition topping 40 points in three straight wins with Marsh scoring two tries and impressing with his all-round game.
With first-choice hookers Makaia Tafua and Jaydee Auloa both out with injuries, Marsh has been called up to start against the Tigers with SG Ball Cup dummy half Amasio Tiatia named on the bench.
Warrior #73 Ivan Cleary’s son Jett has established himself at halfback for the NSW Cup side while Warrior #106 Vince Mellars’ son Haizyn is the competition’s top try scorer so far with six already after snaring doubles in each of the side’s three games.
The Warriors are coming off a disappointing effort against competition leader Newcastle last Saturday when they lost 22-32 after being level 22-22 with 14 minutes to play.
After making his NRL debut last week, Luke Hanson returns to the NSW Cup side on Friday night.
