The Warriors Community Foundation has launched a pilot programme with the support of the Manurewa Local Board, bringing together its educational programmes designed to support the wellbeing of tamariki and their whānau.
Thanks to the Manurewa Local Board’s funding, the foundation will be able to support thousands of participants over the next 12 months.
The pilot will deliver Tupu Māia, Tama Toa, Have a Go Days, Prepare to Perform and secondary school leadership and resilience workshops across local schools.
Through these programmes, tamariki will develop confidence, leadership skills, resilience and healthy habits while whānau can engage in activities that strengthen community connections.
“This pilot allows us to bring our key programmes together supporting tamariki to thrive both at school and in life, creating stronger, healthier communities in Manurewa,” said Warriors Community Foundation CEO Lincoln Jefferson.
“The Manurewa Local Board has been instrumental in bringing together not only the foundation but another nine amazing organisations to create an eco-system of support for our tamariki.
“Manurewa has produced plenty of successful rugby league players including Warrior such as Erin Clark, Peta Hiku, Joe Galuvao and Henry Fa'afili.
“We want to inspire the next generation to be great at everything they do and to work hard and dream big.”
Manurewa-Papakura Ward councillor Matt Winiata welcomed the partnership.
“Manurewa is an incredibly active community but also one with high rates of diabetes and obesity.” He said.
“To have a charity like the Warriors Community Foundation making sports stars of today directly available to interact and engage with Manurewa's rangatahi is a fantastic way to motivate and inspire tomorrow’s champions.
“I'm proud to be involved with Lincoln and the Manurewa Local Board in bringing the Warriors Community Foundation to schools in Manurewa and I can't wait to see what success this yields.”
