Unveiled: Te Kahu Here, first NRLW indigenous jersey

A powerful symbol of unity, connection and identity will take centre stage at FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton next week when the One New Zealand Warriors’ NRLW players proudly wear Te Kahu Here.

The landmark jersey will be the standout feature on a day of two notable firsts.

For one, the Indigenous Round match against the Canberra Raiders on Saturday, August 16 (7.15pm kick-off) will be the Warriors’ first home game at their new home ground while it’s also the first time the club has ever had an NRLW indigenous jersey.

Crafted by Māori artist Jayden Hokianga (Ngāti Porou, Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Maniapoto), the design draws inspiration from the deep bonds shared among the wāhine.

“Like what was created for the men, this is more than a jersey,” said Hokianga.

“It’s a visual narrative. A taonga created for the women specifically, and one that reflects their strength, their connection to one another and the cultures they carry with pride.”

The name Te Kahu Here weaves together two powerful concepts: Kahu, a traditional cloak worn as a symbol of prestige and protection, and Here, which speaks to connection.

Traditional tāniko and tukutuku patterns flow across the jersey, representing the diverse backgrounds and whakapapa within the playing group.

“The cloak is something you wrap around you. Your culture, your whānau, your team,” said Hokianga.

“When these women take the field in this jersey, they’re wrapped in all of that, and it protects them out there.”

The launch of Te Kahu Here follows the unveiling of the men's 2025 Indigenous Round jersey Te Ao Mārama, also designed by Hokianga.

Te Kahu Here went on presale to One New Zealand Warriors members from 7.00pm today and will be available to the general public from 7.00am tomorrow (Friday, August 8).
