One New Zealand Warriors second rower Kurt Capewell is now a three-time State of Origin series winner after Queensland compelling 24-12 victory over New South Wales in last night’s decider in Sydney.
Not selected for the Origin I 6-18 loss in Brisbane, the 31-year-old was recalled by coach Billy Slater for game two and produced a try-scoring performance that had him rated the man of the match by many judges despite Cameron Munster receiving the accolade.
Capewell backed it up with another intensity-packed 80-minute effort in the defining match of the series highlighted by his aggressive line speed and defence, his scramble and leading the line chase down his edge of the field. He finished with 90 metres from 12 runs and 33 tackles.
He has now been part of Queensland series victories in three of the five campaigns he has been involved in – 2-1 in 2020 when he played all three matches (two in the centres, one in the second row), 2-1 in 2022 when he was in the second row for the three games and now 2-1 this year playing the last two matches in the second row.
