After underlining his promise with an impressive New South Wales Cup debut, Caelys Putoko is back on the Jersey Flegg Cup (under-21) stage for the One New Zealand Warriors’ round 17 match against Manly Warringah at 4 Pines Park in Sydney on Saturday (1.15pm kick-off local time; 3.15pm NZT).

The 19-year-old, generally used in the centres this season, has been named at fullback for this game.

An explosive ball runner, he showed off his ability to great effect in the Warriors’ 32-12 NSW Cup win over the Panthers last Saturday with two tries, 148 metres from 13 runs, two line breaks, a line break assist, a try assist, five tackle breaks and eight tackles without a miss.

Putoko’s selection at fullback is one of a number of changes coach TJ Ashford has made following last Saturday’s disappointing 14-40 loss to Penrith.

The Warriors had been in a period of solid form leading into last week’s match but lost ground with their effort and also slipped out of the top eight.

When the two sides met in round two in Pukekohe, the Sea Eagles held off the Warriors 32-28.

They’re four points behind the Warriors coming into this match with five losses in their last six games.
