Defending premiers the Newtown Jets stand between the One New Zealand Warriors and a club record eighth consecutive win in their round 14 New South Wales Cup clash at Henson Park in Sydney on Saturday (3.00pm kick-off local time; 5.00pm NZT).

Newtown has the distinction of being the only side to beat the table-topping Warriors so far this season, snaring a 28-20 victory when the two teams met in Auckland in round six in April.

That ended the Warriors’ season-opening run of four straight wins but since then they have put together an outstanding seven-match winning sequence in disposing of the Dragons (40-12), Knights (30-18), Bears (56-14), Raiders (46-30), Roosters (24-14), Bulldogs (40-24) and Rabbitohs (24-6).

The Warriors have been involved in the New South Wales Cup on a continuous basis since 2007, initially with the Auckland Lions that year and then the Auckland Vulcans from 2008-2013 before taking over outright ownership of the side in 2014.

Last Saturday’s win over South Sydney equalled the club’s New South Wales Cup record for most consecutive victories at seven, first achieved in 2016 while in 2017 there was an unbeaten run of eight games (six wins, a draw and then another win).

The Warriors had to work overtime last Sunday to account for a committed South Sydney side which looked anything but the bottom-placed team in the competition.

Despite being down on form lately, the Jets will fancy their chances of halting the visitors’ charge at their beloved Henson Park.

NSW Cup Highlights: Amituanai doubles up in win

They have slipped to sixth on the ladder with an 8-5 record compared to the Warriors’ 11-1 output. After winning seven of their first eight matches they’ve had just one win – a 54-0 trouncing of the Roosters – but have lost to the Eels (18-28), Dragons (4-34), Raiders (18-30) and Magpies (22-32) last week.

The Warriors have named a settled side although they’re without impressive NRL rookie prop Tanner Stowers-Smith who has been called into the first-grade squad for Saturday’s match against the Sharks.

In his absence the highly-experienced Bunty Afoa and Tom Ale are named to start in the front row with Kalani Going coming into loose forward after being on the bench last week.

There’s a boost in the backline with centre Ali Leiataua included. He was set to make his return from injury last week but was a late defection.

At this stage the interchange comprises 48-game NRL forward Freddy Lussick, fullback Geronimo Doyle and promising young middle forwards Toby Crosby and Jason Salalilo.
