For 20 years the One New Zealand Warriors' try-scoring record for a season stood at 23.

With his NRL finals record five tries in the club's dazzling 48-22 blitzing of the Bulldogs in 2003, winger Francis Meli surged past the original record holder Sean Hoppe, who scored 19 tries in the 1995 debut season.

For 15 years it remained before David Fusitu'a matched it with 23 in 2018.

Then with his double in this season's preliminary final against Brisbane, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak first equalled the mark and then claimed the record outright with try #24 for the year.

It was a remarkable feat made even more so because the man with the flying mullet was unavailable for the first six rounds of the season and also missed the final round of the regular season against the Dolphins.

He didn't score in his first appearance of the season against the Cowboys, had a double against the Storm on Anzac Day and failed to trouble the scorers in the next two games against the Roosters and the Panthers.

Then a try-scoring frenzy took flight as Watene-Zelezniak scored 22 tries in his next 16 appearances, failing to dot down in just three games
