Once a Warrior becomes a Warrior again for NSW Cup side

Vastly experienced prop James Gavet will line up for the One New Zealand Warriors in Sunday’s fourth-round New South Wales Cup clash against competition leader Canterbury Bankstown at Mount Smart Stadium (1.30pm kick-off).

The 33-year-old, who returned home last year after a stint in the English Super League, has been named on the interchange.

Gavet made a total of 74 NRL appearances from 2012-2019 for Canterbury Bankstown (1), Wests Tigers (12), Brisbane (1), the Warriors (42) and Newcastle (18). He last played for the Warriors in 2018.

He moved to the Super League spending two seasons with the Huddersfield Giants in 2020 and 2021 before coming home to play for his junior club Richmond in the Fox Memorial competition in Auckland.

He comes into a One New Zealand Warriors side showing a number of changes after a 12-20 loss to the North Sydney Bears in torrid contest.

Head coach Slade Griffin lost four players in the match, winger Sanele Aukusitino and prop Patrick Vaivai with concussion as well as captain Michael Sio (foot) and standoff Eiden Ackland (thigh). Ackland incurred his injury in the course of scoring a spectacular individual try.

Former Roosters winger Moala Graham-Taufa comes in for Aukusitino, Ben Farr is back from injury to replace Ackland in the halves, Paul Roache is at hooker for Sio and Gavet replaces Vaivai on the bench.

Kalani Going will captain the side in Sio’s absence. He was among a number of telling contributors in the arm wrestle with the Bears making 166 metres from 17 runs as well as 31 tackles.
