Search for talent widens for Sky Sport Future Warriors

The Sky Sport Future Warriors’ search for potential talent has been broadened this year to take in players from the under-14 age group.

And, to that end, the club will explore new territory tomorrow by taking a 25-strong squad to Rotorua to play a Bay of Plenty Rugby League selection at Puketawhero Park.

It’s the latest in a number of initiatives to enhance and expand the Vodafone Warriors’ pathways and development opportunities.

Last month Sky Sport Future Warriors under-15 and under-18 teams played against Bay of Plenty Lakers sides in Rotorua while an under-18 selection also faced the Wests Tigers Cubs in the curtain raiser to the Vodafone Warriors’ homecoming match against the Tigers at Mount Smart Stadium on July 3.

“These under-14 boys have been training at the club during this school term, generally just once a week focusing on fundamental skill and game IQ,” said Sky Sport Future Warriors pathways and development coach Tony Iro.

“It’s the first time we have had an under-14 squad training at the club.

“These players join our under-15 and under-18 squads in  preparing younger men through our pathways.”

Tomorrow’s match is due to kick off at 12.00pm.
