Roosters captain Jake Friend was forced from the field in the first half of Friday night's clash against Souths after a head clash and did not return.

Friend was hurt while trying to make a tackle and went off for a HIA which he failed. It is feared he may have suffered a cheekbone fracture although Roosters coach Trent Robinson said that the No.9 would need scans to confirm the extent of the injury.

Meanwhile, Parramatta pivot Dylan Brown is a chance to make his return from an ankle injury in week one of the finals.

Eels coach Brad Arthur said they're hoping to have him back in round one of the finals but would wait until their second match of the playoffs if it would be too risky next week.

Brisbane star Kotoni Staggs left the field early in Thursday's match with the Cowboys with a torn ACL.

The tear was confirmed on Friday, a major blow for both the Broncos and the NSW Blues, ruling him out of contention for the State of Origin series at year's end and the early part of the 2021 season.

Utility back Richie Kennar sprained his shoulder but is expected to make a full recovery.

Rugby league's oldest rivalry resumes

Knights coach Adam O'Brien is confident second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon will overcome a groin injury in time for their sudden-death finals fixture next week.

Fitzgibbon was hurt against the Dragons last round and wasn't picked for Friday's clash with the Titans due to a five-day turnaround.

O'Brien said the key forward was "tracking nicely" towards being right for the playoffs. Versatile playmaker Tex Hoy (hamstring) will also be given every chance to press for selection.

Tom Trbojevic is almost certain to be fit in time for State of Origin with Manly saying he should recover from a shoulder injury in "a couple of weeks".
