NRL PREVIEW

The Vodafone Warriors make their ‘Royal Return to Mt Smart’ for a massive occasion on Queens Birthday weekend. It will be a particularly special day for club captain Simon Mannering, who will play his 200th game for the Auckland side and his 100th as captain.

In a Round 12 match-up the team will host the Newcastle Knights who are in need of a swift turn-around.

After a successful campaign last year which saw them come within one game of the NRL Grand Final, Wayne Bennett’s side has endured a disappointing start to 2014 and sit at 15th after 10 rounds of play. The Knights arrive in Auckland on the back of four-straight losses, which is the longest active streak in the league.

The Vodafone Warriors, sitting at 12th place on a tightly-bunched ladder, will be looking to begin the month of June on a high and produce a win for the faithful at Mt Smart.

Head-to-head: Newcastle Knights 15 wins, Vodafone Warriors 14 wins, 1 draw

Last meeting: Vodafone Warriors 28 (Manu Vatuvei, Thomas Leuluai, Simon Mannering, Sam Rapira, Elijah Taylor tries; Shaun Johnson 4 conversions) defeated Newcastle Knights 12 (James McManus 2 tries; Kurt Gidley 2 conversions) at Mt Smart Stadium.

NYC PREVIEW

The Vodafone Junior Warriors host the competition-leading Newcastle Knights in the second match-up on Sunday’s billing. The Knights, alone atop the ladder on 19 points, have only lost once this season and will arrive in Auckland well-rested after a round 11 bye. The Vodafone Junior Warriors, currently placed seventh, will be eager to build on their 20-16 win against the Titans last weekend and their efforts will be aided by the return of co-captains Mason Lino and Sam Lisone. Lino’s appearance on Sunday will mark his 50th in NYC football, yet another milestone for the club to recognise across its squads.

NSW CUP PREVIEW

The Vodafone Warriors host a Knights’ line-up whose recent fortune matches that of their NRL affiliate. Like the Knights in the NRL, the reserve-grade side has been on a four-game losing skid. After winning five from their first seven, Newcastle have found themselves in a slump and they will be anxious to correct their form at Mt Smart. On the flip-side, the Vodafone Warriors have strung together two back-to-back road wins against Manly and North Sydney and will be looking to continue in this vein on Sunday.
